There are many existing organizations , especially not for profit ones rely heavily on funding programs , donations or grants from outside parties . Included in this type of organization are human service agencies , service organizations which aim for being able to help and uplift human conditions and societies . These provide programs that necessarily contribute to the community , specifically that which relates to livelihood , health , education , the environment , and many more Therefore

, in to achieve its endeavors , these agencies then rely largely on grants like foundation grants , bequest and life income programs

Traditional : Foundation Grants

Around 44 ,000 foundations exist in the United States today , the ten largest of which have combined assets of over 80 billion , and the largest of which , the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation , was named after the chairman the chairman of the Microsoft Corporation and his wife According to law , foundations must expend an average of 5 of their assets annually in grants . On the average , foundations award some 15 billion in grants each year . Foundation grants have served as a traditional source of funding for many human service agencies , becoming more and more attractive because of the bull market on Wall Street These foundations , having portions of their assets in stocks , benefit thru appreciation of their assets because of the significant increases in stock values during the 1990s

Annual Campaign

Annual Campaigns are once a year major fundraising efforts that usually involves direct mail and /or telephone solicitations to agencies or program members , friends , volunteers , and clients . These frequently occur in the later months of the calendar year when individuals and businesses look for avenues to reduce their taxable income . When conducting campaigns , human service agencies distinguish between two types of activities that have long been recognized by fundraising professionals (Smallwood Levis , 1977 . The first of these is donor renewal is contacting individuals and businesses that have preciously donated to the agency . The second type , donor acquisition , is identifying individuals and business ventures that may possibly donate to the agency . Treating these two as separate activities within annual campaigns is due to the reason that the first activity is less costly and has higher success rates than the latter . No matter , the primary goal of every annual campaign is to get previous donors to make more donations , and to increase the amount of their donations

Entrepreneurial : Bequest Programs

Bequest programs are one variant of what is generically referred to as planned giving . In this type , individuals include in their wills or estate plans stipulating that certain funds , stocks , bonds , or properties be transferred to a name human service agency , being a way to thank an agency for services provided to families . Bequest programs do not generate significant revenues over the short term , thereby being thought of as a long-term fund development strategy , being of good use to agencies that serve particular types of clients
