Today suicide is mainly thought of in terms of mental illness , and therefore theories are based on intervention . Suicide today is compared to a mental illness and hygiene understanding of the present , including depression as a factor . Depression can be triggered by a significant life loss , such as the death of a loved one the loss of a relationship , but it can also be triggered by financial troubles or problems in a job , or it can be triggered , obviously , by the loss of freedom and disempowerment .
