Success Stories In South Africa

Reconciliation means working together to correct the legacy of past injustice . It means making a success of our plans for reconstruction and development . Therefore , on this December 16 , National Day of Reconciliation , my appeal to you , fellow citizens , is : Let us join hands and build a truly South African nation

The commemorative dates that will be discussed are December 16 : Day of Reconciliation and March 21 : Human Rights Day . The Day of Reconciliation is celebrated by Afrikaners as the Day of the Vow , and is remembered

for the events that took place in 1838 . This is when a group of Voortrekkers vanquished a Zulu army during the Battle of Blood River ANC activists commemorated it as the day in 1961 when the ANC started to give arms to soldiers with the intention of overthrowing Apartheid For the new South Africa 's , this is a day of reconciliation , which means that its intention is to focus on overcoming conflicts of the past while at the same time looking towards the future and building that future with hopes of a new and just nation

March 21 : Human Rights Day marks the day in 1960 when a plethora of police murdered 69 people at Sharpeville . These people were merely holding a peaceful protest against laws that had just been passed when the police opened fire some of the participants were reportedly shot in the back . This event was reported and made coverage across the globe After this day , four days passed and then the government banned black political organizations . Leaders around the state were arrested or if not arrested they went into exile . During this era , known as the Apartheid , human rights were xistent and abuses around the state were immense on all sides with no regards to gender or age . Human Rights Day is then a step in the direction of peace that ensures for the people of South Africa that abuse has stopped

The purpose of the is mainly to examine how South Africa is commemorating these dates and why it is important that such a commemorating is important . The focus of this statement will be that remembering the past is important because it allows the authoritarian rule of the past to not be repeated . Through Human Rights Day and the Day of Reconciliation , South Africa is hoping , and this will be stating that the abuses endured will not have to be witnessed again , and by studying the past , a better future can be built . Mistakes must be examined in for their reappearance to be made nil . By presenting human rights and transitional justice , the will delve into how past transgressions can be stopped , or at least , not repeated
