The Time of Her Life

Kate Chopin 's The Story of an Hour ' is the story of a woman 's reaction to news that her husband has been killed . Although there is no mention of how long the Mallards were married , it was long enough to have a negative effect upon her . Their relationship was not uncommon when the story was written (1894 ) or today . Mrs . Mallard had loved him - sometimes . Often she had not (Chopin , 1 ) For

her the relationship was one-sided and oppressive . She does not make Mr . Mallard out to be a monster , and even thought of the good things about him that she would miss . However , she is overjoyed at the prospect of living a life of her own without his powerful will bending hers (1 ) Within an hour of hearing the news of his death , Mrs . Mallard dies of shock when he comes home alive . Her thoughts during that hour illustrate the point that while many things become very noticeable once lost , and may be replaced by something better , time is not one of them

Mrs . Mallard 's strongest reaction to the news was that she was now free . It is springtime , and the sights and sounds of new life outside her window serve as a perfect metaphor for what she believes will be her new life alone . The change will be as dramatic as the change of seasons She can now think of herself , and look forward to many things she had missed in her marriage . She was now suddenly hoping for a long life instead of a brief one . Like springtime , her life is now full of promises to come

Mr . Mallard 's absence opened doors she had never dreamed possible . His loss would be replaced with a long , full and free life . She would now have the time to devote to herself , to grow , and to flourish . But all the promises are broken when her husband returns . The lost time cannot be brought back or replaced . There was no time for her before his death ' and after only an hour free ' there will be no more time for her now
