M . de Rknal hires Julien Sorel as a tutor to his children . In his time men attain powers from the Church over the army . Julien 's desire to be an aristocrat decided him to make an affair with Mme . de Rknal . The affair didn 't last since M . Valenod uncovers their affairs and sent Julien (by M . Chylan ) in Besanzon seminary

Stendhal always gives emphasis to the importance of history of French in the novel . The author reflects to the rise of power of Napoleon , its restoration and revolution (1830 . In his novel , he stressed how history affects the future and affects the lives of our men . This is shown from the obsession of Julien and Mathilde with the past . Julien idolized Napoleon while Mathilde adores Queen Margot (cited in Beyle , 1830 . The characters in the novel reflect a typical historical political and social environment during the end of restoration period . Stendhal creates M . Valenod and Marquis represents being liberal and a fading upper class , respectively . The structure of the novel thus describes the rise and fall of French history seen in the characters of the novel . In the 19th century French literature , Stendhal denounces the traditional love scenarios . He introduced the triangular desire /love through an intermediary character . The intermediary character makes the other lover jealous , in which making the situation more complicated . The author wanted to introduce psychology into the story .
