Should the US Government Fund Stem Cell Research

Stem cell research could probably the next step in medical technology as it can provide cures to many diseases that are deemed incurable . It even provides the possibility of curing cancer by replacing cancer cells with healthy stem cells . However , stem cell technology is associated with cloning , which associates it with some ethical concerns involving the value of life since it has been argued that killing embryos is an act of murder . Still , there are contentions that an embryo is not to be regarded

as human life which leads to a point that there is nothing unethical or immoral about pursuing stem cell technology also known as therapeutic cloning . Stem cell research should be adamantly pursued by the government to uphold the value of life

The United States government under the leadership of George W . Bush has banned the use of public funds to forward stem cell research although privately-funded research was not outlawed . Two bills were passed to have stem cell research supported by federal funding . These two bills are the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005 and the Stem Cell research Enhancement Act of 2007 . Both bills passed the Senate but both were also vetoed by Bush . Stem cell research would be a very useful medical technology once the technology is perfected since organs could be grown in laboratories and be ready for transplant to an ailing person . Since the organ was grown using the same genetic components of the recipient , there is no chance that the host will reject the organ . This also eliminates the danger of getting organs from other people which will affect the health of the organ donor . Having two kidneys is still better than having one . With grown organs , the recipient can also be ascertained that the organ is still of good quality . Many people die while waiting for an organ donor but with stem cell technology , this would not likely happen . The technology presents a potential of curing certain diseases and diss that cannot be handled by the existing medical science (Robinson , 2005 . Since stem cell technology is therapeutic cloning , many people express a disregard for the issue since they fail to understand that the goal of therapeutic cloning is not the same as reproductive cloning .
