State of democracy in Nigeria
After the appointment of the 62 year-old old Olusegun Obasanjo as the first democratically elected president since the fall of Shehu Shagari in 1983 , the future of Nigeria looks good . Most of the challenges faced by the country , especially under the circumstances of a disturbing past that literally ruined the country under the rule of military dictators , are being dealt with lot responsibility on the part of the democratically elected president The weakness of the rule of law that was widespread during the previous military regimes is now giving way to a

strong administration that has started taking stringent action against past and present defaulters . There is now no room for the government to falter in implementing the effective rule of law which has been aptly exhibited by way of prosecution of close aides of previous dictator Abacha for alleged crimes including murder . Such actions have instilled confidence in the public which has made the country 's environment much less fearful as compared to a few years ago . In keeping with the characteristics of a good democratic government , political prisoners are dealt with in a dignified manner and security forces no longer harass dissident leaders The media too is now an effective entity in asserting its role in the country .
