Taking A Stance

One word could concretely describe human history : progress . We are the specie that is seemingly addicted to the concept of progress . Through evolution we had improved our bodies , we had enlarged our brains , we had undergone all that change to adapt to our environments and be the master of this world . And as if being the superior organism in the planet is not enough , we are still pushing things forward . We had achieved our present superiority through technology . But as

technology develops further , we gradually come to fear it . This fear of technology is particularly exemplified by the issue of having a national ID card system . There are many writings about the national ID card system like William Safire 's Threat of National ID ' and Alan M . Dershowitz ' Why Fear National ID Cards ' This particular issue has been much disputed and the agree ' side seems to be in the losing end . Dershowitz 's article is the more commendable one simply because it aims to explain the unheard side of a timely

There are several points that made the article of Safire weaker than of Dershowitz . William Safire 's article entitled Threat of National ID , is explicitly disagreeing with the idea of having a national ID card system . His stand is just an echo of what many others had already argued . Moreover , his manner of arguing could be somehow described as threatening . He had described the idea of having a national ID card system as something that would be overall negative for anyone . It was like as if there is nothing good about the concept . The end effect is just that his reader would be scared and likewise agree with him

On the other hand , Dershowitz had aimed to explain to the readers the unheard part of the story . He had written the article with simple and easily understandable words . He had used concrete examples to help the reader see the picture clearer . But most commendable of all , he had deliberately made his article vulnerable for rebuttal , particularly in the third paragraph . This makes his article a healthier discussion than of Safire

Dershowitz had explained to the readers the potential benefits of having a national ID card system - something cons to the issue like Safire are deliberately avoiding . But most importantly , the end effect of the article is not leaving the reader scared of the technology , but how the technology could lead us further in our pursuit of progress
