The Stamp Act Crisis

The Stamp Act was a law passed by the Government of England and imposed upon the American colonists without their consent . The colonists were not happy about having laws imposed upon them without them having any say in the matter . They had already been given some laws which they had accepted and decided they had had enough . Because of their frustration with the government and the unjust laws , they combined their energies and intelligences to retaliate against the Act . This led to the Stamp Act Crisis in which

the colonists refused to go along with the Act . The crisis and retaliation led to the eventual nullification and repeal of the Stamp Act . The repeal of the Act angered the government and the King and helped lead to the further hard feelings and disagreements between the English mainland and the colonists . The government wanted more control over the colonists , while the colonists had discovered they could effectively govern themselves and wanted more freedom to do that For this reason , the nullification and repeal of the Stamp act was the beginning of what eventually turned into the revolutionary war

The history of America began in 1620 when the pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock and attempted to build a society . The English mainland however continued to provide the colonists with protection from invading enemies and this protection carried a price . Because of this burden during a war that had gone on for years between England and the French the people on the mainland began to resent the colonists for not contributing to the expense of their protection . This became a more severe problem with

the increased burden from the war England had been fighting creating a major financial deficit on the country

Following this long war , known as the Seven Years War or the French and Indian War , England 's national deficit had increased monumentally and the country was essentially ready to try almost anything in to recover financially . The need to reduce the debt led to a number of new laws designed to increase revenue for the country . The nation had promised the American colonies that 10 ,000 soldiers would be provided to them for their defense . Because of this defense the nation claimed to be providing , and the increasing feelings among the English people that the colonists needed to contribute to the national debt , representatives of parliament decided that the colonies needed to provide some revenue to offset the costs (Morgan , 1962 . This led to increasing laws and rules on the American colonies in to regain some of the money spent on their protection

First a Sugar Act was passed which charged a fee on imported molasses This was met to bring some revenue to the mainland or to decrease the amount of trade the colonists were doing with countries other than England .
