Running Head : ERICKSON Erickson 's Psychosocial Stages (Name (University (Lecturer (Course (Date Erickson 's Psychosocial Stages In 1950 , Erik Erickson had published a book entitled Childhood and Society . The first part of the book deals with understanding the development of a normal ' child . Erickson believed that the determination of what is normal would shed light to the notion of what is abnormal . Therefore , he tried to define what was normal with respect to age and behavior . The consideration of mental health problems in children requires a standard found in normal children

. Erickson believed that the mental health problems were expressions of disturbed development , most common too children and adolescence where the person experienced several changes . The change was a shift from infancy unto self-sufficiency
Erickson had devised the nine Psychosocial Stages of life . Reflective of these stages was its relation to Freud 's Psychosexual Stages . The first stage of psychosexual development was he Oral Stage which occurs in the first year of life . It coincides with Erickson 's Infancy stage wherein the zone of development was the mouth . At this stage , Erickson explained that a normal child develops trust and /or mistrust . Erickson argued that when the basic physical and emotional needs of an infant were met , trust would develop . However , if the needs were not met then the infant would develop mistrust
