The merger was completed on August 12 2005 , serving 44 million subscribers worldwide . The deal , source said is a merger of two equals , as the top executives of the two companies believes each strength fit each other very well . Sprint is seen as a leader in wireless data communication and has stronger presence in the consumer market , while Nextel has been the pioneer in the walkie-talkie service and has its primary customer base among business customers
