The celebrations that followed the fall of the Berlin Wall were almost global . This wall not only symbolized the great division that existed in the world , but even more significantly , it was a sinister reminder of the Great Iron Curtain , a symbol of Soviet power . The States that had been under Soviet control for decades were suddenly declaring independence . That the Soviet Union

kept power and control over many States by use of fear is evidenced by the rise of nationalism among various former Soviet States when Nikholai Gorbachev opened the democratic space and , through Perestroika , reduced control of the KGB over the Soviet States

Coming from Gorbachev to Boris Yeltsin , the Soviet Union was becoming more open both in dealing with the rest of the world and by embracing Capitalism . The use of the KGB to suppress nationalistic feelings was reduced and it was just a matter of time before many States broke away
