INTRODUCTION

Social movement basically refers to a movement started by a group of people or organization with common interests who strive together to achieve common goals . The issues surrounding the social movement are cultural , social , political or legal or they may be carried out for bringing or resisting a social change . People choose social movements when individual action is unable to highlight the problem or bring

about a change . Through social movements they feel empowered and free to express themselves independently . American history is full of evidences on various social movements started on ideologies common to the interests of people . The motive of the movement is generally connected to the problems of the general masses . But this doesn 't means that social movements continue for lifetime they start with the objective of achieving something and end with success or failure

A social movement needs a liberal atmosphere for it to begin . It cannot start in a society where people and government are against to it . The time and place should be friendly for the movement to start on any issue . In the old days social movements were present but mostly on the issues of poverty and wealth discrimination . But as the time passes , the subjects evolved from poverty to values , culture , ethics , politics and other social causes . A social movement doesn 't starts just like that it needs a burning issue and a solid groundwork . Therefore , the first and foremost prerequisite of a social movement is an `initiating event This is an event which is followed by similar events in a society and will eventually bring about the social movement . The events later on become `volcanic model ' when groups of people sharing similar views join the movement and support the cause behind it with zeal and zest Therefore , the second prerequisite for putting the grounds of a social movement is to over come the `free rider problem . This means provoking people over the issue and convincing them for joining the movement so that they can put the issue together before the higher authorities Naturally people have a mindset of not indulging in any social movement as it will waste their time or cause them trouble they are only interested in the outcomes and not the process . Therefore , it is necessary to convince as many people as possible of a society to join the movement and support the cause behind it . The movement mostly starts with a `charismatic leader ' who convinces people and gives them directions and instructions . Because of his charismatic authority , the supporters look to him for guidelines and follow him in what he does People can join the movement at any stage there will be people who will join the movement in its initial stage because of having common values and beliefs , others will join when the movement will be in the stages of success...
