In this essay an attempt has been made to present a comparative rhetorical analysis of two articles that deal with issues concerning poverty . These articles are written by Carrett Hardin and Peter Singer These two articles have been chosen for the present analysis because both the articles deal with the issue of poverty although they give different solutions to poverty . While Hardin does not support the policy of rich countries helping the poor countries , Singer argues that poor countries should be supported by giving them donations . Hardin fails to

present an emotional and logically correct argument in to persuade the reader to accept his viewpoint . The data that is used by Hardin does not have any emotional impact on the reader . The metaphor method used by the author indicates that his analysis is mechanical , failing to appeal to the reader 's emotions . Singer presents his views in an emotional manner by giving several examples and illustrations . By the use of these examples , the author is able to convince the people that they should spend a particular amount of money to give charity to the poor countries . The use of this approach indicates that this author believes in moralistic and humanitarian values

While Hardin uses metaphor approach to prove his argument , Singer uses examples approach to suggest that there is a need to give helping hand to the poor people . One more difference between these two articles is that they were published during different points of time . While Hardin 's article was published in 1970s , Singer 's essay was published in 1999 thereby showing that Singer represented modern approach to poverty Since Singer appealed to the emotion of the audience , he was able to convince the readers that they should generously contribute to the welfare of poor people . On the other hand argument presented by Hardin is too idealistic , which cannot be implemented in the current situation of increasing cooperation between the rich and poor countries Therefore , the main contention of the present essay is that Singer 's argument is more convincing than that of Hardin

The main criteria of rhetorical analysis are theme , purpose , audience and appeal to emotion that is found in these two articles . The main purpose of Hardin is to convince the people that they should stop giving money to the poor countries . On the other hand , Singer argues that it is the duty of the rich to give charity to the poor as within a particular country one can notice that rich people have been giving donations to social service institutions in to improve the position of less fortunate people in the society . This point has been further developed by mentioning various...
