Over the years , there have been a number of different data collection methods that have been developed in to study various aspects of a particular society . One of the most recent methods of data collection currently being used by sociologists as a means to collect data

and important information in the study of a particular society is the use of cultural probes . This data collection method was used as part of a case study conducted by Shanthi K . Robertson on transnational migration This would provide a review of the article of Robertson entitled Cultural Probes in Transmigrant Research : A Case Study ' which was published in the InterActions journal published by the University of California Los Angeles in 2008 . Specifically , the would provide a brief synopsis of the review of literature conducted by Robertson for the study , his methodology , the results of the case study conducted and the conclusions derived by the author . It would also provide an overall critique of the study conducted by Robertson based on the information provided

Overview of the Case Study

Cultural probing has been defined as the method of collecting data through the collection of various media of a particular society . This includes the use of photo albums , post cards , journals , recording , and the like . The main objective of cultural probing is to provide a subjective interpretation of a particular period or event that had occurred in society which is to be used alongside with other more traditional forms of data collection (Robertson 2008 . For this particular study , Robertson (2008 ) aimed to determine the effectiveness of the cultural probing data collection in the study of various situations through a qualitative case study . In this case , the study was to be on transnational migration that has been occurring in Australia over the last few years

Robertson (2008 ) justified his case study selection based on the rise of more and more immigrants to Australia resulting from its growing economic stability . The current trend of immigration in Australia have dramatically changed as Australian policies now favor those who have acquired a degree from an academic institution in Australia as opposed those who have acquired an educational degree elsewhere . As a result there is now a rise in the number of individuals heading to Australia as students who would attain an educational degree and then convert their visas into a skilled professional migrant visa to be able to stay longer . Robertson aimed to limit his study on the experiences of these students-turned-migrants in Australia through their personal experience through a reflexive , interpretive methodological framework (Robertson 2008 ,
