Social Movements are mostly associated with the sole purpose of inflicting change into the society . Such movements became prominent in the United States during the sixties where civil rights groups aimed for the individual rights of not just the African American people , but of the entire colored people as well . At the height of the formation and actions of these movements , one state in the South became the center of activities in pursuing for equality

. In this period of what can be considered as an American social revolution , Mississippi housed active social movements which catered to the needs and rights of its African American populace

Southern states in America have been the most ambivalent in terms of slave liberation since the manpower of huge numbers of factories relied on black slave workers . By the time civil rights movements flourished in the north , southern states like the Mississippi began to catch up with the social wave of revolution despite facing the most resistance from its white counterpart . In this essay , it will be seen how the social movements - with the likes of the ones from Mississippi - were able to create changes in the society whether on a short span of time or long-term effects .
