At the time of Jesus , there was some form of equality between men and women though not completely . This is because the things that bring gender about gender inequalities in today 's societies did not exist then . Things such as formal education and professional jobs had not been introduced then . Roles and responsibilities for men and women in the family and the community as a whole were clearly defined at the time of Jesus ( Blasi , 2002 . Women were expected to take care of household chores and taking care of the children and their husbands . Women had no place in the public arena and mostly kept to their homes . They did not hold any leadership positions politically or in church (Barton , 1994 They were subjective to their husbands and were expected to respect the men in the community .
