Social development is an essential component of education . Children must be taught how to interact with peers in such a way that builds positive relationships . The increasing emphasis being placed on building the academic abilities of students has resulted in students who do not possess the social skills necessary to be successful when interacting with peers , with family and with society in general . In to produce students who possess good and moral character , school must combine academics with character development curriculum . Research

has shown that students who are taught social skills see an increase in academic achievement (Sailor , et al , 2007 , 366 . Therefore , in to adequately prepare students to be successful both in the present and in the future , it is vital that schools implement character development curriculum

Positive social development occurs when children are taught , either in school or at home , how to tell the difference between right and wrong According to Erik Erikson 's Developmental Stages , one skill that young children must possess in to display appropriate social skills is the ability to be autonomous (Harder , 2002 , 1 . This stage occurs in early childhood when a child is just beginning his or her school career However , this is the appropriate age to teach autonomy because it will allow children to continue to grow while also possessing necessary social skills to be successful .
