Positive social change in the field of environment may be defined as a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas , strategies , and actions to promote best environmental practices in the community Positive social change can be used to accept or reject strategies aimed at the overall improvement of the people 's welfare , depending on their environmental effects . Several service-based learning projects have revealed that while some projects may improve the livelihoods of the people without compromising

their physical and environmental health some projects may have adverse effects on the same . For example , in the field of water fluoridation , a project carried out by Cham (2009 ) on the safety of water fluoridation in the United States revealed that there are both positive and negative effects of water fluoridation . The main positive impact identified by this project was tooth decay prevention while negative impacts caused by water fluoridation were mainly enamel fluorosis , skeletal fluorosis , bone cancer and bone fracture . Another project carried out by Angela Colling (2009 ) focusing on the use of Bisphenal-A , a chemical used in plastics revealed that the chemical was present in a variety of baby products such as bottles and toys , and can cause negative effects on reproductive , neurological and immune systems during critical stages of infant development .
