Background and context

American Indians , the descendents of the first known settlers of America , have become an important part of the American polity , society and economy and are given legal status as indicated by the constitutional guarantee of their rights (Snipp 1992 , 352 ) During the colonial era , they struggled with white population that wanted to conquer various regions of America . Consequently , their number progressively declined after 16th century although in the 20th century the American government attempted to assuage the feelings of the first natives by introducing legislations protecting their interests . It is found that during the past 100 years , there has been revival of American Indian population since according to the 1990 census there were 2 million American Indians and Alaska natives (Snipp 1992 , 354 ) This shows that the American administration has been trying to support the aboriginal population . Contrary to this , during pre European contact there were 10 million American Indians who stayed in different parts of America (Snipp 1992 , 353

Most of the American Indians were rural settlers since nearly 50 percent of the population resides in rural areas (Snipp 1992 , 357 ) In spite of this , in the recent years , there has been increase in the aboriginal migration to urban centers (Snipp 1992 , 357 ) Due to this , there have been a few alterations in the social and economic life of American Indians . Migration and settlements in the urban regions has brought a few changes in the life style of aboriginal groups

Although many aboriginal groups originally belonged to eastern regions most of them have been forced by the American administration to settle in western parts (Snipp 1992 , 356 ) This has resulted in less public hostility towards aboriginal groups since white settlers were allowed to exploit the regions earlier occupied by American Indians . At present according to census data , Indians can be found in the western states mid-west , southern states , and east (Deloria 1981 , 140 ) This shows that Native Americans are found in various regions . In 1970 , according to census data , most of American Indians were found in Arizona , California New Mexico , Oklahoma , South Dakota , and Washington , although many Indians can be located in regions such as Alaska and North Carolina (Deloria 1981 , 142
