Soc. 300 Introduction to Sociology
Running Head : RACE Race Students name Name of University Course Date A race can be defined as a socially constructed category composed of people who share biologically transmitted traits that members of a society consider important (Macionis , 1995- 2001 . The earth is filled with different races and these races fill the earth with different rich cultures and backgrounds . Without different races , the earth would be filled with monotony because all people would be similar . On the other hand , interacting with different races gives mankind a sense of

appreciation of the different races through leaning about the various cultures they represent . A race shares a common ancestry and same origin hence similar cultural traits (Macionis , 1995- 2001 . The common point of origin and traits shared by these races is the core ingredient in defining the term race . For instance different races have different mannerisms and different ways of doing things . These differences distinguish one race from another hence give a sense of identity to people . On the other hand , different races are defined by their physical appearances for instance skin color , hair color , color of eyes and body features defines different races and their identity (Macionis , 1995- 2001 . A race shares its biological traits through inheritance of such traits carried through the genotypes composition . When different races intermarry , they produce a different race with similar characteristics to the parent races . In other words they cannot be referred to as the original race because they have biological traits from two different races . A good example is intermarriage between an American white person and an African black person . The children produced in such a relationship cannot be defined to be from one ancestral race because there are two races involved in this social interaction . Hence the new race produced will be referred to as African American
