As world population grows and life expectancy expands many world leaders worry about the sustainability of the planet 's resources to support expected growth rates . In to stabilize the growing population and improve the quality of life in some of the fastest growing societies the United Nations held the International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo during 1994 . The conference resulted in a series of political actions

defined to address population by addressing what authorities believed to be some underlying causes of high fertility rates , an absence of reproductive health knowledge and initiatives as well as an uneducated and suppressed population of women . The conference 's formal purpose was to set a regimented consensus of population goals for the next 20 years and articulate how to put that regiment into place worldwide

Addressing the issue of population requires analysis of the most deeply held cultural , religious , political and individual beliefs (The Sierra Club , 2008 ? 1 ' Many previous attempts to address population in terms of long term sustainability ended in controversy , often pitting women 's rights advocates against environmental advocates (The Sierra Club ? 1 ' But , at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development , 179 nations met in Cairo , Egypt , to re-define how we address both the problems of and solutions to population growth
