The Question of Freedom and the Road to Reconstruction

Following the Civil War , African Americans were faced with a redefined landscape based on principles of liberty that had previously excluded them . This ugly historical fact was bound to be at the forefront of institutional change . With this analysis , I will show how Mr . Garrison Frazier framed the argument for a new freedom to be opened up to all American citizens regardless of race

Mr . Frazier elaborates his understanding of the rights promised by President Lincoln , The freedom , as I understand it , promised

by the proclamation is taking us from under the yoke of bondage and placing us where we could reap the fruit of our own labor and take care of ourselves and assist the Government in maintaining our freedom ' From this point of view , Mr . Frazier is focusing on the right of self-actualization . By this , he believes that promise should extend human rights to include property rights and labor rights . This , for him and the African-American community he represented , was the true beginning and basis of freedom

However , it is important here to highlight his reasoning and foundation for his beliefs . He is not only interested with the creation of these liberties , he is making the argument that from this foundation leads to the maintaining of these promised freedoms by taking care of ourselves ' and assisting the Government ' once they achieved the possession of their own property and the production of the goods they created .
