Being a hot issue of 1980s leadership has undergone a remarkable progress , and now it 's crucial to understand the basics of leadership because we all lead others in professional or domestic stages in one way or other Though leadership has undergone the great development in last few decades , but the roots of it lie in 1960s where by

some leadership models have been developed which are still in use . One of such models is `Situational Leadership Model ' developed by Paul Heresy and Ken Blanchard . Heresy 's book `Situational Leadership ' and Blanchard 's `One minute Manager ' are considered to be best examples in the early development of leadership . According to this model of leadership , the leader must have the ability to adopt different styles of leadership in accordance with the prevailing situation
Heresy and Blanchard have attempted to integrate several existing bodies of research into a model of leadership styles appropriate to differing situations . Their situational leadership theory is based on (1 ) the amount of direction (task behaviour ) a leader gives (2 ) amount of socio-emotional support (relationship behaviour ) a leader provides and (3 ) the maturity level that followers exhibit on a specific task or function (Fulmer Robert M . The Situational Leadership Model basicly works on four leadership styles and four levels of development . The leadership styles include S1 Directing Leaders , S2 : Coaching Leaders , S3 : Supporting Leaders and S4 Delegating Leaders . And the development levels are D1 : Low Competence High Commitment , D2 : Some Competence , Low Commitment , D3 : High Competence , Variable Commitment and D4 : High Competence , High Commitment
Being an effective leader one must know his /her staff very well , i .e their maturity level , so that he /she can lead them in accordance with their maturity level and prevailing situation . This is not limited to a professional setup but one can adopt the strategy in day-to-day life as well
The effective leadership depends on how accurately a leader applies a leadership style with referece to the development or maturity level . For example one is given the opportunity to lead a group of new people in an organization . The leader himself works as a delegating leader in normal circumstances whereby the control is left with the followers , and they involve him only when needed . This sort of leadership style is very effective for D4 level of development having experienced and confident people . But now the situation has become different than that of normal and the new group is standing at D1 level . Here the leader needs to be `situational ' in to excell . For me , having such kind of prevailing situation , I 'll turn my self as an S1 manager from S4 , as per required by the level of development of the followers
