He is on the search for his brother , Christopher , who made him a vampire Christopher was horrifyingly brutal and he killed their mother , which has made him Simon 's sworn enemy . Simon has been trying for most of his afterlife to find and kill Christopher for good , and he has finally tracked his brother to the town where Zoe lives . Once there , though , he finds himself drawn to Zoe 's loneliness . Before long , he is confiding in her and feeling compassion for the first time in a very long time

The setting was more on a contemporary period , most usually at Zol 's house and the hospital , at time when her mother is dying of cancer However , flashbacks of past centuries bring back Simon 's memories of his mother .
