Sigmund Freud : The concept of Id , Ego , and Super Ego

Sigmund Freud was an Austrian physician who invented the psychoanalysis and psychology . He was one of the most influential and authoritative thinker of the twentieth century . His study focus on the interaction of unconscious and conscious mind , and this is considered as the most valuable work which is basic theory for psychology

For Freud , human mind is not as simple as we think . In his

theory , he showed that the mind is a complex energy system which can be divided into three levels : id , ego , and super ego roughly corresponding to the unconsciousness , the consciousness , and the conscience . To understand these conceptions , we can take the growth of the children for an example . When the children were a little boy or little girl , they just do everything they want such as eating when they are hungry , drinking when they are thirsty . They do not have the awareness of everything , or they just do everything in their mind without thinking . It is called the Id . However , when the children grow up , they go to school and were educated by the society . They have the consciousness of what is wrong and what is right to determine what they should behave in accordance with moral principles . That is the ego . And the super-ego is the thinking for the result after they do something wrong . For example , a boy live with his parent when he was born and witnessed his father is a brutal toward the mother . And the boy feels resentment and hatred against the father and wants to kill him when he grows . That is the id or the unconscious always exist in the mind of everybody . But when the boy grow up , the environment surrounding impact him and make him understand the moral standards . So , he knows that the father is the man who born and feed him , and he no longer want to kill him to take revenge for his mother . That is the ego or the consciousness that was shaped from the influence of society . And if the baby boy killed the father , he will regret and pay dearly for this action . We call the super-ego

According to Lawrence Cunningham and John Reich in Culture and Values : a Survey of the Humanities , the unconscious or the id is described as the chaotic emotional forces of life and love (called libido or Eros and death and violence (called Thanatos (567 . In addition , Lawrence claimed that One way to penetrate the murky realm of the human unconscious , according to Freud , was via dreams (567 . Once , people are dreaming at night , the Id will go through their mind . And they will see something unreal or unbelievable . Sometimes it might happen in the real life otherwise , it is just a warning for the future . In his theory , Freud wrote The dream is the royal road to the unconscious (567...
