Aunt Jennifer 's Tigers

by Adrianne Rich

The speaker in the poem Aunt Jennifer 's Tigers ' by Adrienne Rich as I have finished the poem is the niece of Jennifer which is shown through the reference to Jennifer as aunt ' and the sympathy that can be felt in the second and third stanza 's . It is about women trapped in the society that is dominated by men . This might be regarded as a means for the author to show what it was like to be in a society that

is constrained by tradition and oppression . The tone or the author 's attitude towards the poem is perceptive and emphasizes on the oppression that she do not want to take part of . The verbal music that she used is that of consonance , such that of screen and green , which is a pattern that continues throughout the poem . The verbal irony can be seen in the tiger 's that are proud and unafraid , it seems to denote that Aunt Jennifer should have been like the tigers , however she decided to stay in the suppressed life that she has . Thus , the author had seemingly told us what appears to be the situation of Aunt Jennifer by sort of equating her with the tiger however as the poem progresses , the author then points out all of the ordeals ' and oppressions ' that is actually experience by Aunt Jennifer . Thus , explaining that Aunt Jennifer is not really that brave as that of the tigers . The rhyme and meter of the poem is an Iambic Pentameter , meaning that it has five stressed with an unstressed syllable in each line which are in the unstressed-stressed pattern . The imagery is composed of several metaphors pertaining mainly to the main theme which is oppression of women ' or male dominance . Most of it is composed of visual and tactile experience imagery which is very effective in bringing out the emotions that are contained in the poem . Accordingly , the iambic rhythm is associated with stress and perseverance . Denoting that there is a need or a kind of with the situation presented in the poem
