According to Marquis and Huston (2003 ) shared governance is one of the most innovative and idealistic organizational structures , which was developed in the middle of the 1980s (p .172 . It is hailed as an alternative

to the conventional bureaucracy as it is characterized by a flat organizational structure that entails decentralization and empowerment of people within the decision-making system , thereby providing nurses with more control over their professional practice (Marquis and Huston , 2003 , pp . 172-173 . Nevertheless , according to the aforesaid authors , nurse-managers still struggle in their role changes brought about by hesitance and difficulty in accepting such changes . In this regard , nurse-managers must be open-minded , creative , and willing to commit to his or her work and organization in to counteract the barriers to shared governance .
