Shame and Anxiety in Supervision Abstract The definition of the role between supervisor and supervisee is often clouded and creates shame and anxiety on the part of the supervisee This is largely due to cultural differences between the two groups and how they each perceive their relationship with the clients . These emotions are also felt in the relationship between counsellor and client in much the same way as each group seeks the assistance they need . The cultural diversity and , often blindness , between each set of individuals gives rise to misunderstanding and

insecurity , and therefore arouses shame and anxiety . Open and honest communication is the key to overcoming such barriers and allows the relationships to prosper
The growing diversity of the population observed in many countries today has led to changes in the cultural environment within the counselling profession . Today , the cultural environment fostered in most helping services comprises the majority however , there are encompassing certain beliefs and traditions that are observed by minority cultures within the organisation . Despite the current developments to improve the relationships in the counselling service , shame and anxiety are still commonly , especially between supervisors and their supervisees . This essay looks into the role of the supervisor and their contribution to the presence of shame and anxiety within Counselling service . It will look into how the presence of shame and anxiety within counselling service and how methods of supervision have contributed to this situation
