Shakespeare Sonnet 18

Although no distinction is made between the two but So long lives this , and this gives life to thee clearly shows that this ' can be referred to beauty as well as to poetry . So it is a characteristic of Shakespeare that outwardly poem resonates with the eulogy of his lady-love , but in quintessence it venerates his own poetry . But he does it in such a subtle way that no one can judge or assume about it till end

The metaphor that Shakespeare chooses to start admiration of his beloved but after first

two lines , he recognizes that this metaphor fall short to his purpose and level of admiration but he does not give up like ordinary poet but make the comparison unparalleled in favor of his beloved by elevating her character and pointing out the shortcomings of a summer 's day (too short , too burning , too coarse , sometimes too dingy . But in the ext few lines he feels same for his beloved as she is not eternal beauty too but he asserts that her beauty will ' live forever " because her beauty is captured in his (Shakespeare 's ) lines

It is quite obvious that Shakespeare has subtly and skillfully utilized a conventional poetic form to present a conventional theme but t is also clear that his use of poetic diction and tools are extraordinary and it 's the presentation and style rather than the form and theme that make this sonnet unusual . He doers not restrict himself to love theme only but also explores some other themes of universal interests and perspective i .e . the nature of destruction but all these theme remain subordinate to the primary conceit i .e . the praise of his beloved
