Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment constitutes physical acts or word which when done or uttered amount to undesirable sexual advances and causes unnecessary interference in an individual 's work and consequently the individual 's performance is compromised as the work environment becomes intimidating At this point it is very crucial to note that sexual harassment is not only between members of opposite sex . It could also be members of the same sex . Lack of consent is also an important factor in sexual harassment

so that the harasser 's words or acts must be unwanted by the victim . The victim in this case is not only the person directly affected by the harasser 's conduct but anyone who is offended by the harasser 's conduct . According to research , sexual harassment begins in the early stages of education . At least 25 of children experience sexual harassment in their early stages of education . The research also indicates that some of this harassment is between students while a considerable percentage is between teachers and students . The research further indicates that sexual harassment cases are common as in most cases the harasser derives fun or finds it funny to do so . A teacher who sexually harasses a student could be hiding behind an even greater problem like marital problems , professional crisis , death of a spouse or general frustration s in life . Sexual harassment is therefore proved if there was no consent . Consent is important so that if the victim is claiming harassment and yet had consented then there is no sexual harassment . However , if a child is below 18 years even if he / she consented it still amounts to sexual harassment because of the age factor . Sexual harassment has various effects on the victim which includes considerable embarrassment and self consciousness . Victims of sexual harassment are also reported to appear emotional and highly irritable and also they show some fear especially those of tender age There are various types of sexual harassment as seen earlier . Other than in school there is also sexual harassment at the workplace . Majority of the sexual complaints at the workplace are from women but there is also a percentage of complaints from men . Though this is difficult to prove the harasser could in some circumstances be non- cognizant of his or her offensive behavior or that his or her words are illegal and against the prevailing provisions of the law . There are two types of harassers Public and private harasser . According to Mane Hadjin , 27 , public harasser is one who expresses his conduct to others around him and his intentions and motives are clear . A private harasser on the hand restrains himself and maintains respectable image in public but when alone with the intended target the harasser becomes unruly . Harassers have also been classified into three major categories The predatory harasser feels sexually satisfied upon humiliating others around him . He therefore will harass victims just to see their reactions and responses ( HYPERLINK "http /www .eeoc .gov...
