The existing studies on HIV /AIDS indicate that majority of the infections take place mostly to young people when they are below the age of 25 . Almost all infections are as a result of engaging in unsafe sex It is such statistics that have fuelled the raging controversy over sex education . While there is unanimity that sex education is indeed important , differences have risen sharply over how such education should be carried and the extent of the to be covered . There

are those that are in support of the comprehensive approach to sex education whereas there are those that are opting for abstinence-only as the most appropriate approach due to the age of the children involved

The difference between the comprehensive sex education and abstinence-only education is that while the latter emphasizes on abstinence from sex , the former comprehensively tackles all issues in regard to sex elaborating on the reproductive health and issues of birth control and protected sex . The key controversy surrounding this issue revolves around whether it is appropriate for children at the tender age to be exposed to sexual matters or whether they should just be advised to avoid it altogether . It is however important to observe that each of these methods have their own merits and demerits
