On the said date , the disastrous hurricane struck Galveston , a Texas coastal city . The hurricane is recorded as the greatest natural disaster in the history of the United States because of the number of deaths it caused . Since it occurred before the practice of assigning names to storms was begun , it is referred to by several names like the Great Galveston Hurricane , the Galveston Flood and Galveston Hurricane of 1900 (Heidorn , 2000 . For most of the residents of Galveston however , any reference to `the storm ' is always associated with this particular disaster

In 2000 , Heidorn wrote on the events that took place during the storm He says that the storm apparently became organized around 27 August 1900 in the mid-Atlantic ocean to the west of the Cape Verde Islands .
