Self mutilation is one of the least understood but often alarming adolescent behaviors today . It is estimated that for every 100 ,000 adolescents , between 750 to 1 ,800 will exhibit self-injurious behaviors Among this population , more than 70 are females and many of whom were abused . Although students who self mutilate secretly engage in cutting scratching , burning , head banging , picking , poking and hair pulling these repetitive behaviors are done in bathrooms , empty locker rooms or other isolated areas .
