Self-Concept and Self-Esteem

Self-Concept and Self-Esteem

1 . Self-concept is generally defined as comprised of the assessments that an individual sees as permanent . This could include skills and abilities , or physical and personality attributes , like height , weight and skin color . Self-esteem on the other hand , is an assessment on the emotional level . It focuses on how an individual sees his own worth and how much he regards himself

If an individual sees himself in good light , it generally makes him more confident to perform a task . The opposite would make the person believe that he

simply couldn 't do what is expected of him

In Annie 's case , it would easily become apparent that her concept of her writing ability is not good . In a fit of tears , Annie declared that she thinks she 's not a good student because she can 't complete the writing tasks assigned to fifth graders

Annie 's belief that writing is not for her made her conclude that she would only be good at non-academic subjects like physical education and art , both of which do not require a high

intellectual level . Annie clearly believes she 's one of those students who can 't perform well in academics . Because of this self-concept Annie 's self-esteem , or her regard for her writing skills , is very low even causing her to feel depressed for many days

Because of her worries concerning her writing ability , Annie 's concept of self could suffer . She could grow up believing that writing is innate to some people and could not be learned or acquired . For people with high self esteem as a result of having a good concept of self , they usually end up doing what they believe they can do . If Annie would permanently think that she 's not made for writing stuff , then , it would become permanent and instilled in her being . But if Annie can be made to see that writing is a skill that can be taught , then , her self-concept would change and become better . For the latter to happen Annie has to achieve little successes in her writing subject in for her self-esteem to improve . Those little successes would add up and strengthen Annie 's confidence in her self in the long run

Annie 's emotional outburst would tell me that her self-esteem has been suffering for some days now . If she was more confident , she could have approached Mr . Baer or me and ask for help in her problem . But since she 's already suffering from low self-regard , then , Annie could only be sullen in class continue to get low grade in her writing assignments

Annie 's self-concept and self-esteem could have been affected by other students and the school environment . Most probably , Annie identifies with some students who are only good in physical education and the arts These students could also have problems with their academics , making Annie conclude that she 's probably not a good student because she 's like them

2 . Annie 's self-concept and...
