The Search for Purpose and Meaning

T . S . Eliot 's Journey of the Magi ' is about self-introspection and of having to abandon old beliefs if only to

be liberated , Franz Kafka 's Hunger Artist ' is about the search for satisfaction in a state of inadequacy and in a world where people appreciate you for what you do for one moment and forget about you the next day , while Jorge Luis Borges ' The Book of Sand ' symbolizes man 's conquest for the essence of his life which seems to be an bottomless search . An aggregate of the ideas being propounded by each piece of literature from the different authors can be understood as embodying the often neglected search for meaning and purpose in one 's life

Part of the reason why the authors wrote their books is perhaps to give a shot at illustrating to people through words the complexity of what first appear to be a simple life in a simple world . This is perhaps out of the observation that most people , if not all , perceive their lives as more mechanical than less controlled by the factors external to them . At one point , it can be said that a large number of individuals merely float their lives and allow the rest of the society to fill-in the holes that come along their way . It can be said that the authors are presenting the idea that the task of seeking the meaning and purpose of living in this world is not a walk in the park . On the contrary , it is a daunting task that requires careful contemplation and redirecting one 's consciousness towards the self with respect to one 's surroundings

To expose the readers about the commonly forgotten reality of seeking meaning and purpose and to influence the reader to do something about it are perhaps two of the things that the authors are trying to impress on the minds of the readers . To a certain extent , the authors want to affect the readers in such a way that the readers of their works will actually be compelled to indeed do something to get a better grip on their lives . A thorough reading of the books might affect the readers in such a way that they will get a glimpse of what they might have been lacking all along , which could very well explain all the mundane experiences that they might have encountered - the time to stop doing the `mechanical ' things that they do and ponder for a brief moment perhaps a moment of silence , and to reflect on what one has achieved or what one has been...
