Scott Joplin was born in Texas during the late 1860s . During his younger years , his family moved to Texarkana , which was the b of Texas and Arkansas . It was in this town that his talent in music was first discovered by his school instructor , a German-born local names Julius Weiss . Weiss was certainly impressed with Joplin 's talent that he further developed it by introducing several European art forms , such as the opera . Eventually

he joined a music program at the George R . Smith College in Sedalia . As he grew older , he learned how to master his art and took several music jobs performing instruments and lending his vocals to groups such as the Texarkana Minstrel Troupe and Texas Medley Quartet , and as a pianist in several clubs in Sedalia , Texas like the Maple Leaf and Black 400 clubs

While maintaining Sedalia as his special refuge , Joplin made his mark in the music industry by travelling to several towns like St . Louis which eventually became popular as the center of ragtime music . Joplin started to establish an image in the ragtime music scene with his compositions . In 1899 , Joplin worked with Sedalia music store owner and publisher John Stark to release The Maple Leaf Rag , which secured the status as the greatest and most famous of piano rags .
