Viena , Austria was the place of birth of Lise Meitner . Meitner had lived from November 7 , 1878 until October 27 , 1968 . On her early days as a child , she was a shy and retiring . These personalities made her become well known today . Lise Meitner has become popular with her discovery of the fission of atom

In the history of science , Albert Einstein has been much known and well respected in this discipline . Einstein discovered and formulated what is known to be the Energy . In his study

, he had first discovered the relationship between matter and energy , and latter expressed the relationship into E mc2 . In this expression , E stands for the energy m for mass , and c2 for squared speed of light . With this simple mathematical equation , many scientists were blessed to discover more One of them was Lise Meitner

In 1930s , many scientists worked with the subject on atom . Lise Meitner worked in Germany in an experiment on bombarding uranium atoms with neutron . In 1938 , Meitner and her nephew Otto Frisch recognized that the atoms split . This splitting of atom was named by them as fission

Likewise , several years earlier than 1938 when Meitner and Frisch discovered fission , Enrico Fermi made the same experiment and had the same result . But , Fermi did not realize what the result of his experiment was . What is happening in fission was explained by Meitner and Frisch . According to Meitner and Frisch , the explanation behind fission is that , some of the mass from the original atom were converted into energy . These converted energy were made possible by Frisch and Meitner by using the formula of Einstein for energy that is E mc2

Splitting of atoms can be induced . This means that fission process can occur even in unnatural way . From Einstein formula of energy , E mc2 it is observable from the relationship of the variables that a certain amount of energy is equivalent to a certain mass . But it is also important to note that a massive amount of energy can be obtained from a small quantity of mass . So , this means that the relationship between the mass and the binding energy are inversely proportional . In effect , to minimize the use of energy , the one must be decreased whenever one is increased

Therefore , inducing fission can be obtained either by increasing its mass or increasing its energy

The later way in obtaining fission is not practical . A very large quantity of energy is necessary for fission to happen . Splitting of atom happens when the nucleus gets excited . When the nucleus gets excited extra energy are added . Then , gamma or beta rays are released to reduce the energy

On the other hand , adding mass as a method of splitting atoms takes the process of bombarding a appropriate nucleus with neutrons . Those nuclei have fissionability parameters close to 1 . The added neutron definitely adds mass and therefore will reduce the binding energy . The importance of reducing the binding energy is to...
