Running Head : SCHOOL VIOLENCE School Violence [Author] [University] School Violence In April 2007 the whole world was shocked when a gunman murdered a student and a teacher at Virginia Polytechnic Institute . The gunman sent a multimedia suicide message to a foremost television network equipped himself with a weapon and hundreds of bullets , and explored the campus to slay other 30 undergraduates and faculty and hurt 15 other students in classrooms before killing himself There are thirty-two people died and another thirty-two who are wounded in that incident . As

stated by one of the students who witnessed the incident , the whole institute was in great fear during the massacre . The students are running out of the campus . A stampede was reported to occur . There were two distinct incidence of shooting during the outbreak . The constituents of the campus , after the dreadful incidence were asking why they were not informed about the on-going incidence so that they had able to suspend the class . At the end of that tragedy , all of them learned the value of prevention
The above scenario is only one of the many instances that depict school violence . Most of the parents believe that besides the house , the second safest place is the school . But that is not really the case . Violence and other hostile forces are even present in schools and campuses Though school administrations have declared their preparedness for such situations , their level of awareness is never proven unless actual occurrence of violence took place in school
All the school 's constituents are threatened by the fact that school is not even secured from such happenings . Yet the most affected stakeholders are the students themselves
Impact on Student 's Learning
The most fundamental purpose of school is to teach the students about so many lessons in life - may it be in theoretical or practical field Exposing students to violence while they are in school greatly affects their learning process . Disturbances often distort the lessons aimed towards the comprehension of the students . The mere thought of danger or violence could make a student lose his concentration on his studies
Using Abraham Maslow 's Hierarchy of needs , safety needs of a person must be satisfied in for him to pursue his belongingness needs , esteem needs , and self-actualization needs (having physiological needs as the most basic needs . Obviously , if the school would fail to provide security for the students , the students themselves would find it very hard to absorb what is being taught to them
In other studies , students who are exposed to school-related violence drop their interests for studying . Traumatic experiences such as hostage-taking , school-shooting and the likes make the students feel that unsafe thus refusal to go to their schools and attend their classes are often the next scenario
