Schools are institutions where the young are nourished with knowledge
in an effort to make them better people in future . In order to attain
this goal or objective these institutions must be peaceful or safe all
the parties involved that is the non teaching staff , teachers as well as
the students themselves . However , more often than not this is tampered
with and more schools have the learning processes affected due to peace
unrests . Establishing the extent to which school are affected by this
problem maybe a difficult affair as in most cases more concentration or
attention are given to the serious incidences of violence . This
mannerism is however inappropriate as it could be like sitting on a time
bomb . This paper will focus on the school violence trends , causes as
well as the possible solutions to the problem .
In an effort to ensure that schools remain safe enough to pave way for
effective learning it is appropriate that the relevant authorities carry
out extensive research to establish the extent or spread of lawlessness
in schools . School violence can be in many forms like victimization ,
bullying , classroom disorders , injuries on teachers as well fights among
the students . Other forms of school violence according to the National
Center for Children exposed to Violence (NCCEV ) include emotional and
physical ridicule , threats , sexual offences graffiti and vandalism ,
trespassing and gangs . Indicators for School Violence included deaths
that occurred in schools which are mostly homicide and suicides . Some
students carried guns as well as other weapons to schools posing a great
danger to the security in their schools . In their report , they found out
that schools were no longer the safe havens where children would
effectively learn and teachers carryout their teaching duties without
problems . Students lived in fear of being attacked , street gangs existed
in schools and some carried guns to schools . Incidences of verbal abuse ,
use of drugs and alcohol intake as well as bullying jeopardized with the
learning activities (NCCEV , 2003 .
Cornell notes in his distinguished book `School violence : Fears Versus
Facts ' some of the incidences of shootings in schools are prevented when
students seek help on the knowledge that some of their classmates have
the intentions of engaging in the violent acts . Some of the dangerous
signs to look up for in students who can engage in violence include
watching or playing violent or terror video games (Cornell D , 2006 .
Others declare their intentions to their fellow classmates and the
school administration should be keen when investigating such incidences .
No stone should be left unturned just as the saying goes ' its better
safe than sorry . In most cases students who engage in acts of violence
are expelled from schools . However , it is crucial to establish the
effectiveness of such severe punishment . Whether expulsions succeed in
keeping violence in schools distant is a vital question that relevant
authorities must address . It is important to be cautious when punishing
students so that all loopholes...
