School uniforms undeniably represent or symbolize the schools qualities , organization , significance and its students as its main representation . They ranged from formal to the informal and from plain to more colorful mixture of colors to symbolize the school 's creativity and character . The implementation of school uniform is independent from every school . So it is greatly assumed that implementing uniform policy contributes to the learning and development not only for the students

br but for their families and community as well . A number of these advantages related to school crime were specified such as the prevention of gang wars , the decrease of school violence and reduction in theft of clothing . On a sociological perspective , school uniform policies instill discipline and sense of belongingness among the students . Most public high schools in the US apply school uniforms policy primarily because of these benefits and advantages . Other private schools also adopt school uniforms to have the same benefits aside from to identify themselves among other private schools

But there has been unending debates with this issue since many students do not want to partake with this policy stating that it violates their freedom of expression in school . Some parents are also apprehensive with the additional cost brought about by additional clothes to their children 's clothing . There is also an existing issue with regards to children of religious groups that cannot adopt the school uniform as against their religious principle . With all these restrictions among who opposes , some schools have to adopt with some changes and adjustments Less strict policies are to be implemented such as uniforms to be more casual as in jeans and knit shirt , limiting uniform style among students with deep religious beliefs and provision of financial assistance to parents that cannot afford to accommodate expenses on uniforms

The debate among students to stand up with their rights against school uniform dates back with the first case during the 1969 Supreme Court rulings of Tinker v . Des Moines Independent Community School Accordingly , the court is bound to protect the freedom of expression of students and therefore it must be protected by the law unless this protection will not interfere with the school 's appropriate discipline to the students . This case became the celebrated issue among the students who does not want to participate in their school 's uniform policy . Although students became protected by the Tinker case as a ruling under the First Amendment or freedom of expression , the Supreme Court decided to put the decisions with regards to policies under the school jurisdictions . One of these schools ' jurisdictions is the imposition of school uniform policy among the students
