Introduction
This study represents the qualitative component of a meta-analysis project examining the designing and planning stages to implement a school-base mentoring program . At present , remarkable enthusiasm for the potential of mentoring programs exists among practitioners , policy makers , and politicians alike . Mentoring programs are growing exponentially across the country , and according to Big Brothers /Big Sisters , school-based mentoring programs in particular are cited as the most rapidly growing of all forms of mentoring (Big Brothers /Big Sisters Annual Report , 2006 . In 2005 , 90 ,000 youth were reportedly involved in school-based mentoring relationships through Big Brothers /Big Sisters alone
The current climate creates an assumption that these programs are effective interventions for at-risk youth . As recently as January 2005 President Bush announced plans for a 450 million initiative to expand access to mentoring programs for young Americans 300 million of which would focus on mentoring for school-aged students at risk (State of the Union Speech , 2005 . These programs are advertised as initiatives with multiple aims in supporting at risk- youth , including improving academic performance and interpersonal relationships between children and their peers , teachers , other adults , and family members reducing the drop-out rate and juvenile delinquency and decreasing gang involvement among young people ( HYPERLINK "http /www .ed .gov /news /newsletters /extracredit /2004 /06 /0603 .html http /www .ed .gov /news /newsletters /extracredit /2004 /06 /0603 .html accessed 7 /25 /08
