Saturday Saturday is a fiction novel written by award-winning author Ian McEwan and ws published in 2005 . The setting of the novel is within a single day - the 15th of February in the year 2003 , a Saturday , when hundreds of thousands of protesters marched against the then proposed war against Iraq . Thus the ever-present crowd of protesters in the background throughout the whole story , be it in the radio , television , etc The main character of the novel is Henry Perowne , a neurosurgeon who is generally contented with his life . from both his professional and personal successes : he has a good career as a respected neurosurgeon , and is happily married to a news lawyer . Added to these , he has good relations with his children who are already towards adulthood . However , Dr . Perowne is restlessly bothered by the world trends , or the current events as he sees them unfolding before his eyes , through the media which efficiently keep him abreast with the world . What is especially troubling him is the seemingly inevitable war against Iraq as well as the growing pessimism as a result of the tragic September 11 attacks in the US .
