Faith and Architecture

Thick , heavy walls , sophisticated sculpture details , and grand arches are our typical view of Roman Cathedrals . It was around 800 A .D . to 1100 A .D . when the religious , especially in Europe , started building these kinds of architecture to house most precious relics that reinforced their faith

It is of human nature to put some kind of high value to things which remind us of memories we choose to keep . The intensity

of this practice is evident in religion . There even are circumstances where many would believe that some relics can heal the sick or cast truth to material wishes ADDIN EN .CITE Rymer20042 2243Eric RymerRomanesque Architecture2004Ju ly 19 2008http /historyli nk101 .com /lessons /art_history_lessons /ma /romanesque_architecture .htm (Rymer 2004

A pilgrimage is a journey to find purpose in life and often , if not always , is a visit to where relics lie or to places where sacred events happened (Mirriam-Webster , 2008 . For Christians , travelling to Jerusalem is a pilgrimage much like a voyage of a Muslim to Mecca or a Buddhist to Lumbini . To commemorate the saints , welcome the pilgrims and celebrate the faith , feasts were customary in these places (Thurston 1911

Today , it is much easier to travel . If one is interested in going for his /her own pilgrimage , travel agencies would be delighted to entertain you . It 's a business now , and appears more of a vacation than a quest of or for being . Still , I personally think , that many people still believe in the true concept of pilgrimage . That behind the high-class airplane flights and countless digital pictures , the soul still has to find its purpose , still gets lost , and still needs to find it again just like it was thousands of years ago

If one is looking for answers , signs , enlightenment , and inspiration from good old Samaritans , donkeys , or stars in the night , it might not be there anymore . The modern pilgrims are in for a different kind of challenge now
