It has been much discussed throughout human history that the Roman Catholic Church may have been the most prominent hindrance to the advancement of knowledge . There have been many accounts of incidences wherein the Roman Catholic Church had been entangled in controversies with the world of science . There were accounts of the Roman Catholic Church burning the books that held scientific breakthroughs at least and at worst they would even burn the author of those books

. But out of all the controversies that shroud the Roman Catholic Church vs . science issue , it seems that the feud with the scientist Galileo is the most famous . Galileo was set in trial and convicted by the of the Roman Catholic Church for his support to the Copernican-heliocentric view of the universe (Reston 233 . The Roman Catholic Church was clearly alarmed by Galileo since the scientist was presenting scientific evidence about something that most of the people then don 't know . Was it because the Roman Catholic Church only wanted that they would decide what should people believe in ? Or was it just a classic example of a very human trait , the fear of the unknown ? The geocentric view is basically stating that the earth is the center of the whole universe , and the sun was only given a planetary status . Then the theory of the geocentric universe met its first challenge from the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus . Copernicus presented a completely opposite theory , the Copernican-Heliocentric view of the universe . Basically it just states that the sun is the center of the solar system and the earth is not the center of the universe . This may be explained by certain reasons . One is that maybe the people are already acquainted with that theory that it would be difficult to accept a new one . It maybe hard to accept because that could mean re-publishing tons of books and reformatting the whole of science as we know it . A more probable reason is that the Roman Catholic Church supports the geocentric view . The support of the Roman Catholic Church will be emulated by some its members . We all know that there are people that would live their lives according the word ' as in word-per-word . It is never a bad thing to be religious , but one should not go to the extremes of even being brainwashed and accepting everything they would tell us as the truth .
