The Role of Media in Society Today
The role of media is predominating in the present society . But the word
`media ' needs explanation . According to Merriam-Webster 's Collegiate
Dictionary (2003 .p .770 , the word `media ' was used as plural of medium
of cultivation , conveyance , or expression . But since 1923 the singular
`media ' and its plural `medias ' seem to have originated in the field of
advertising . In most other applications media is used as a plural of
medium . The great popularity of the word in references to the agencies
of mass communication is leading to the formation of a mass noun ,
construed as a singular . The scope of media is for ever widening . We
are exposed to media in every walk of life , from morning till we go to
bed . Our day begins with the newspaper and the television for the
current news , views and , the advertisements that are supposed to cater
to our needs . The consumerist society cannot thrive without the media .
Advertisement and propaganda are two functions of the media which have
great impact on our daily life . People can express their views and
reactions to public events in the media . It also provides livelihood to
the journalists , writers , columnist and the reviewers . Media can turn an
obscure writer into a best-selling author , as is the case of
J .K .Rowling . With the advent of the Internet , a most powerful dimension
has been added which revolutionized our life .
The newspaper used to be the most powerful medium till the introduction
of various television channels like BBC and CNN which broadcast news
updates every hour through out the world . Sometimes views are expressed
in the guise of the news making it difficult for the public to
distinguish between the two . News , particularly investigative reports ,
can make and break a government it can also boost or ruin a big
corporate house . The impact of media is so great that a big scandal in
the media can mar the prospect of a celebrity . But we cannot forget
that the irresponsible adventurism by paparazzi led to the fatal
accident of Princess Diana . The print and electronic media also inform
us of the latest development in science and technology . It also provides
colourful updates about the glamorous world of cinema and theatre . But
from the point of view of versatility the Internet surpasses all other
media in educating and entertaining the mass . When it began as a means
of military communication in USA , nobody dreamed that it could generate
grand success stories like Google , Yahoo , Hotmail and YouTube . We
choose to focus on the role of the Internet in education and
entertainment .A new word `edutainment ' has been coined by combining the
two . Even cellular phone is now used to access the Internet and to get
news through SMS . The Internet can be used for dissemination of
knowledge to the remotest corner of the world , it can as well be browsed
to get information and admission to the university of one 's choice .
