Music artists success is defined or dependent on their fashion statements , which is usually unpopular with the older generations . Punk rockers vowed to be different , not necessarily pretty or attractive . A current shift making waves in the music industry is Madonna 's adoption . Although Madonna had two children , is now 48 years old , she has the image of a hot sex symbol . Her music and fashion appeal to very young crowds . There is a very different crowd concerned with her adoption than the crowd wanting to wear their bra on the outside of her clothes , as she did in Vogue album . The upscale fashions portrayed in MTV was a return of music fashion and images from Janice Joplin , Elvis Presley , Sonny and Cher , and Ike and Tina Turner . The punk rock fashions may return in one way or another then go away . MTV focused on fashion because music videos were just coming out at that time . Music Videos promoted albums .
