As can be read from the poem , the landscape was then dark since night was fast approaching and the snow that is starting to fall drives the animals into their lairs The landscape being barren for me symbolizes two things

: dread and death . The absence of living creatures and the blanket of nothingness covering the whole landscape creates the illusion in my mind that the author was talking about death

Although Carl Sandburg in his poem Chicago ' affirmed the city 's wickedness , crookedness and brutality , he was not one to despise it . In stanza number 10 of the poem he even dared others to show him another city with lifted head singing so proud to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning ' Sandburg did not hate this crooked , brutal and wicked city , as a matter of fact he loved the city , he was proud of it . For him , despite of the vile things that are present in his city , it is still full of wonder , energy , and life . He remains proud of the butcher , toolmaker and stacker of wheat 's energy and vivacity for living and on this he celebrates his city...
