Robert Arneson

The artist that I selected is Robert Arneson . I chose Arneson for my artist to analyze because I found it interesting how all of his work was non-functional and some times abstract , but was all based on real-life people , events or subjects . I was also interested by the way that Arneson used images of himself , houses he lived in , iconic images from his own life , and even his own approaching death as inspiration and subjects for his works . This inclusion of elements of his own life into his sculpture pieces makes his work

beautiful to me . I think I find his work beautiful and appealing because it is relatable . By knowing that his work was inspired by experiences or viewpoints from his own life his art is made more human and relatable , and it is more beautiful because it is easier to understand because it is human

During his career Arneson created non functional sculpture . These were often drawn first in three dimensional drawings , then rendered in clay and glazed later . This practice of drawing out his ideas first likely came from Arneson 's background as a cartoonist for a local news which was his job before attending art school and becoming a sculptor It also enabled Arneson to create frameworks for sculptures outside of his studio , allowing him to capture ideas when inspiration arose and to later breathe life into them with clay when he was back in his studio
