Robert had been reared Catholic , attending Jesuit schools before joining the army . During the Second World War , Altman was involved in several bombing missions in Indonesia and the Philippines . In 1946 , he lived in California and worked as publicity assistant . The Altmans were well-known in Kansas City . Indeed , Robert Altman was able to find good jobs because of his family name .
